ATLAS
The ATLAS (Automatically Tuned Linear Algebra Software) project is an ongoing research effort focusing on applying empirical techniques in order to provide portable performance.
Calculix
CalculiX is a package designed to solve field problems. The method used is the finite element method.
With CalculiX Finite Element Models can be build, calculated and post-processed. The pre- and post-processor is an interactive 3D-tool using the openGL API. The solver is able to do linear and non-linear calculations. Static, dynamic and thermal solutions are available.
DUNS
Diagonal Upwind Navier Stokes Code The DUNS code is a research code developed at the Propulsion Engineering Research Center at Penn State University in the mid to late 1990's. The object of the DUNS code was to make a CFD code both flexible and fairly general, and made great strides in that area compared with other codes I worked on while at Penn State, but it remains primarily a research code.
FreeMat
FreeMat is a free environment for rapid engineering and scientific prototyping and data processing. It is similar to commercial systems such as MATLAB from Mathworks, and IDL from Research Systems, but is Open Source.
Gerris
Gerris is a Free Software program for the solution of the partial differential equations describing fluid flow.Gerris is supported by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric research).
gmsh
Gmsh is a 3D finite element grid generator with a build-in CAD engine and post-processor. Its design goal is to provide a fast, light and user-friendly meshing tool with parametric input and advanced visualization capabilities.
Maxima, a Computer Algebra System
Maxima is a system for the manipulation of symbolic and numerical expressions, including differentiation, integration, Taylor series, Laplace transforms, ordinary differential equations, systems of linear equations, polynomials, and sets, lists, vectors, matrices, and tensors. Maxima yields high precision numeric results by using exact fractions, arbitrary precision integers, and variable precision floating point numbers. Maxima can plot functions and data in two and three dimensions.
Netgen
NETGEN is an automatic 3d tetrahedral mesh generator. It accepts input from constructive solid geometry (CSG) or boundary representation (BRep) from STL file format. The connection to a geometry kernel allows the handling of IGES and STEP files. NETGEN contains modules for mesh optimization and hierarchical mesh refinement.
NGSolve
NGSolve is a general purpose 3D finite element solver. Version 1.x supports scalar (heat flow), elasticity and magnetic field problems. The package provides C++ source code such that more advanced problem solvers can be built around it. NGSolve performs adaptive mesh refinement, the matrix equations are solved by optimal order multigrid methods.
Octave
GNU Octave is a high-level language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides a convenient command line interface for solving linear and nonlinear problems numerically, and for performing other numerical experiments using a language that is mostly compatible with Matlab.
OFELI
Based on a long experience in the development of finite element software, OFELI (Object Finite Element LIbrary) is a framework of C++ classes for the development of finite element programs.
OpenFLOWER
OpenFlower is an open source CFD software (FLOW solvER, literally) written in C++. It is mainly devoted to the resolution of the turbulent unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The code is mainly intended to be used for Large Eddy Simulations of turbulent flows. It was first designed for Ph.D. students (and researchers) to enable exchange of knowledge about numerics and turbulence modeling
SLFFEA
SLFFEA stands for San Le's Free Finite Element Analysis. It is a package of scientific software and graphical user interfaces for use in finite element analysis. It is written in ANSI C by San Le and distributed under the terms of the GNU license.
TOCHNOG
TOCHNOG is a free finite element program.
Visualisation and Rendering
Coin3D 3D Graphics Developer Kit
Coin3D is a high-level, retained-mode toolkit for effective 3D graphics development.(Originally from SGI)
Geomview
Geomview is an interactive 3D viewing program for Unix. Geomview lets you view and manipulate three-dimensional objects: you use the mouse to rotate, translate, zoom in and out, and so on.
MayaVi Data Visualizer
MayaVi is a free, easy to use scientific data visualizer.
Pixie Open Source renderman
Pixie is an open source RenderMan renderer for generating photorealistic images.
