[email protected] is the result of a merger between two Silicon Valley powerhouses: Excite, a global Internet media company and publisher of Excite.com, one of the most widely recognized portal brands on the Web, and @Home Network, the leading provider of high-speed residential Internet services over the cable infrastructure. In late 1998, with the broadband buzz relatively quiet and narrowband portals such as Yahoo! and Infoseek feverishly clamoring for advertising revenue, Excite CEO George Bell and @Home Network CEO Tom Jermoluk met to discuss a new and exciting direction. Their vision was to combine Excite's powerful brand with @Home's broadband distribution platform to create the global media network for the 21st century. The two CEOs decided to join forces, agreeing to perform what, at the time, was one of the biggest mergers in the Internet's short history. On May 28, 1999, [email protected] was born.
By exposing the millions of Excite users to the compelling Internet experience made possible by @Home's high-speed platform and distribution agreements with more than 20 cable companies worldwide, [email protected] can offer consumers personalized Internet services at any speed, any time, and on any device. In addition, [email protected] can offer advertisers a unified way to target, measure, and report advertising across numerous delivery platforms and devices.
[email protected] is at the forefront of a communications revolution -- the momentum continues.
Dual OC-48 IP Backbone
[email protected] operates its own national infrastructure, which connects to the global Internet at multiple Network Access Points (NAPs). The network also has Tier 1 peering with other national and regional Internet Service Providers. A high-speed fiber-optic IP backbone connects these access and peering interchange points to [email protected]'s Super Nodes. [email protected]'s 5Gbps backbone provides a high performance, cost-effective, scalable transport mechanism, as well as the capability to extend service to new markets without having to constantly reconfigure the network as it expands.
