fx (Formatter/Exercisor) "is an interactive menu-driven disk utility" for IRIX used to map bad disk blocks, display disk label information (drive parameters, partition sizes, volume directory), and when invoked in expert mode with the -x flag (fx -x) allows the formatting of a disk and modification of a disk label and drive parameters.
Variations
By default, a standard IRIX installation has two variations of fx: a standalone version located in /stand/fx used to modify the system disk by entering "boot stand/fx" in the PROM Command Monitor prior to booting the system, and an "IRIX command version" that can be invoked as any other command but cannot modify the currently booted system disk.
