IRIX 6.5 Editions and CD Sets
There are several official and unofficial terms to describe editions of IRIX 6.5 CD sets.
Core CD Set
SGI product literature, while not entirely consistent, has used the term, "Core," to describe the set of CD-ROMs needed to perform a full, clean installation of IRIX 6.5.x on an empty hard drive.
A Core CD set includes a release-specific bootable Installation Tools CD, a set of release-specific Overlays (for versions 6.5.1-6.5.30), several Foundation CDs, a CD containing Development Libraries, and one or more Applications CDs. While this collection of CDs is sometimes called a "Full" set, that is not a completely accurate statement, as SGI generally sold the Core CD-ROMS as components of a larger "AWE/ASE" software bundle. These larger bundles included an NFS CD, additional documentation CDs, demo CDs, and other software. See the section on "Server and Workstation Environments" below for more information about these bundles.
Core CD sets are sometimes called "Base" CD sets, although they may better be thought of as a combination of a set of Base CDs and a set of Overlay CDs. Meanwhile, some individuals consider a Base set to be the core set of 6.5 CDs released in June 1998. In any case, "Base" is not an official SGI term for IRIX CD sets.
Core CD-ROMS
"Base" IRIX CDs
Foundation CDs
All releases of IRIX 6.5 use the original, June 1998 version of the Foundation CDs.
- IRIX 6.5 Foundation 1 CD, June 98 (commonly known as "Foundation 1")
- IRIX 6.5 Foundation 2 CD, June 98 (commonly known as "Foundation 2")
- IRIX 6.5 Development Foundation CD, June 98 (commonly known as "Development Foundation"). Later Development Foundation CDs (1.2, 1.3) were included in MIPSpro packages.
Development Libraries CDs
Three versions of the Development Libraries CD were released. Each version of the Development Libraries CD was included with a particular range of IRIX releases.
- IRIX 6.5 Development Libraries CD June 1998 (included with IRIX 6.5.0 through 6.5.15)
- IRIX 6.5 Development Libraries CD February 2002 (included with IRIX 6.5.16 through 6.5.18)
- IRIX 6.5 Development Libraries CD February 2003 (included with IRIX 6.5.19 through 6.5.30)
Release-specific "Overlay" IRIX CDs
- IRIX 6.5.x Installation Tools and Overlays CD(s)
- IRIX 6.5.x Applications
- IRIX 6.5.x Complementary Applications (for IRIX versions 6.5.22-6.5.30)
Overlay CD Set
Overlay CD sets were released strictly as update packages. As subsets of the Core CD Set, they are insufficient for performing a clean installation of IRIX on a blank hard drive.
"Overlay" IRIX CDs
- IRIX 6.5.x Installation Tools and Overlays CD(s)
- IRIX 6.5.x Applications
- IRIX 6.5.x Complementary Applications (for IRIX versions 6.5.22-6.5.30)
Server and Workstation Environments
In general, purchasers of Core IRIX CD sets from SGI had to buy them as parts of larger software bundles. The bundles included both SGI-branded software and third party software, and were geared towards either workstations or servers. Since IRIX 6.5 licenses are generally tied to a particular machine, SGI would sell whichever bundle was appropriate to a particular machine. Owners of server systems were sold the "Advanced Server Environment" ("ASE"), while workstation owners could purchase the "Advanced Workstation Environment" (AWE). For example, an Indy would get the AWE, while the very similar Challenge S would get the ASE. Since the core IRIX CDs in both environments are the same, the core CDs from an ASE bundle can be used to install IRIX on a workstation, and likewise, the core CDs from the AWE bundle can be used to install IRIX on a server.
As some of the software was licensed from third parties, the specific software included in AWE and ASE changed over time.
