SAN MATEO, Calif., April 15, 1998 -- Inktomi Corp. today announced an agreement with Digital Equipment Corporation under which the companies have ported Inktomi’s Traffic Server network cache product to Digital UNIX running on the Alpha platform. The companies will also collaborate on a host of marketing and sales activities worldwide. Traffic Server running on the Digital platform is targeted at Internet Service Providers (ISPs), backbone carriers and telecommunications companies worldwide.

"This announcement further affirms Digital’s continued commitment to provide industry leading high performance, high availability and scalable applications to the ISP industry," said Rose Ann Giordano, vice president of Digital’s ISP Business Group. "The implementation of Inktomi’s Traffic Server on Digital’s Alpha platform enables ISP’s to improve the quality of service they can offer to their customers while simultaneously controlling their network costs. We are excited to be offering ISP’s worldwide the benefits of this caching solution, giving them an edge in this very competitive market."

"As the Internet becomes a critical part of our everyday life, the rapid and timely delivery of data to users becomes paramount for global Internet providers," said Dennis McEvoy, vice president of development at Inktomi. "Digital’s large installed base as well as its comprehensive support organization combined with Traffic Server’s performance will provide a strong solution for carriers worldwide."

Currently, the exponential growth in users and the increase in time spent on the Internet results in massive Internet congestion. Caching software reduces this congestion by storing data closer to users, minimizing frequent trips across the network backbone. Inktomi’s Traffic Server is the first commercial network cache designed from the ground up for the carrier-class market. Based on Inktomi’s innovative cluster and parallel computing technologies, it is the only cache designed to scale to more than a terabyte of data, enabling it to accommodate millions of users.
