UUNET Technologies, headquartered in Fairfax, VA in the United States, was founded in May 1987. Now a WorldCom, Inc. subsidiary (NASDAQ: WCOM), UUNET is recognized as the largest Internet Service Provider in the world.
UUNET has developed the most reliable, widely deployed Internet network in the world. Our network's powerful backbone allows us to offer local access from more than 1000 locations worldwide, at speeds ranging from 28.8 Kbps to 155 Mbps. The result: an uninterrupted flow of business information around the world. UUNET owns and operates national networks in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. We also maintain extensive connections to world partners throughout Europe and in the Asia/Pacific region. Our multimegabit backbone extends across both the Atlantic and Pacific and includes direct fiber optic connections between Europe, North America and Asia. We even offer satellite services for remote areas that lack Internet connections.
UUNET's TCP/IP network is the fastest, most reliable and most rigorously- engineered in the world. Our fully-redundant, fully-meshed backbone, comprised exclusively of multimegabit links, forms a lattice designed to reroute traffic should an outage occur. In February 1997, UUNET announced a $300 million expansion of its network. This expansion adds OC-12 links (622 million bits per second) - the fastest speeds available today - on major networking routes. At completion, the expansion will quadruple our backbone and dial access. UUNET also maintains a state-of-the-art Network Operations Center (NOC) to monitor connections around-the-clock so we can optimize the performance of your Internet connection.
