CompuAdd was founded by Bill Hayden in 1982 and filed for bankruptcy in 1993 with corporate assets sold off by 1994.

By 1984 CompuAdd was selling a full range of products for personal computers, including the PCs themselves. The company's growth during the next few years continued to accelerate, and by 1985 CompuAdd had about 80 employees and annual sales of about $25 million. In 1989 Hayden decided to increase the role of retail outlets in the company's scheme. That year, the number of CompuAdd stores was increased from 15 to 71.
