Troubleshooting[edit]

Installing the UltraSound Extreme into a PC running Windows NT v4.0[edit]

  1. Make sure that NT is running reliably on your computer.
  2. Shut down your computer and install the Ultrasound Extreme into an empty ISA slot on your motherboard; restart your computer.
  3. Once the computer is up and NT is running, insert the NT CD-ROM; close the AutoPlay menu if it opens.
  4. To install the drivers for the Extreme, select START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANELS and double-click on the MULTIMEDIA icon.
  5. Select the DEVICES tab.
  6. Double-click on AUDIO DEVICES and make sure no devices of this class are already installed; if one exists it must be removed before continuing. Once you've checked this, "OK" the screen away.
  7. Select ADD and choose UNLISTED OR UPDATED DRIVER.
  8. Browse the NT CD; start at the root level and go to DRVLIB\AUDIO\ESS\i386; click on OK; verify the path is correct and click OK; check that the driver listed is ESS688\ESS1688\ESS1788 AudioDrive; click on OK.
  9. The "ESS Base I/O Address" and the "ES16(7)88 Configuration" settings (IRQ, DMA, MPU401) can be accepted or changed at your discretion; make changes if desired and click on CONTINUE to go to the next option. Note that the ADVANCED tab will allow you to adjust the DMA buffer size if needed.
  10. When finished click on OK, then select RESTART NOW. Once your PC has rebooted into NT you should have audio; if not, work on the assumption that the drivers are installed and working and investigate other areas of audio failure such as speaker connection, Volume Control settings, etc.
