The Higher Intellect project was started in 2000 and continues to provide services under the preterhuman.net domain name. This is some information about the history of the Higher Intellect public server.

The hostname "illusion" was chosen for the initial launch hardware (Compaq ProLiant 5500) and was retired by the time all services moved into co-location hosting. The hostname "mirage" has been used for the primary preterhuman.net server since 2006.
