San Francisco, Calif. - 27 August, 1996 - HotBot today announced that it has signed its first alliance agreement with BellSouth as part of a strategic initiative geared towards working with Internet service providers (ISPs) to develop customized Web services for their subscribers. HotBot's ISP partner program is bringing customized navigational and guidance services to BellSouth.net users. HotBot, the popular search engine that has indexed more than 54 million documents on the World Wide Web, is a joint effort of the HotWired Network and Inktomi Corporation. It can be accessed via the Web at hotbot.com.

In related news, BellSouth has just launched BellSouth.net service, its new regional Internet access service. "With BellSouth.net, users throughout our nine-state service region will be able to easily navigate the Web using HotBot, and get the information they need," said John Robinson, President of BellSouth.net Inc. "HotBot's customizable search options make searching fun and informative."

For BellSouth.net users, HotBot enables targeted searches that identify Web sites on specific continents, and documents posted between particular dates or at individual Web locations.

Web Tour

In addition to the search engine HotBot, BellSouth.net users will have access to the Web Tour, a guided tour of the Net for new users prepared by June Cohen, one of the HotWired Network's producers. The tour takes users from global Web sites to those of regional interest, including the quirky and playful, as well as the most informative and the bizarre. The tour also teaches new users how to use the Web's resources to find their own way around the medium's ever-changing landscape.

ISP Push

"We are working with ISPs on a global and regional level to help them stay competitive and continually combine technology with content enhancements," said John Zoglin, Vice President of HotBot. "For BellSouth's subscribers, we're bundling the Web's most comprehensive search engine with a specially commissioned Web guide that will help users at all levels see what the Web offers, from the compelling to the outrageous."
