SAN MATEO, Calif. - November 20, 1998 -Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced that ICQ, a free Internet-based instant communications and chat technology owned by America Online, Inc. (NYSE: AOL), will use Inktomi's proprietary search technology in its new client, scheduled to be released in a test version in the coming weeks.
Inktomi's search technology will be integrated into ICQ's main client menu, allowing ICQ registrants to conduct customized searches of the Internet with just one click from the ICQ desktop icon. Inktomi is working with ICQ to enable users to conduct dedicated searches within the thousands of ICQ-related registrant-created sites, message boards and chat rooms.
"ICQ has a large and technically savvy Internet community, and we are excited about providing them with custom search capability powered by Inktomi," said David Peterschmidt, president and chief executive officer of Inktomi. "Adding search to ICQ will enhance its position as a next-generation portal by allowing users to search right from the desktop."
ICQ's community of registrants is showing extremely strong growth, surging more than 60% to nearly 21 million registrants since AOL, Inc. acquired it in June. Active registrations have grown more than 45% to over 9.5 million. Each day, an average of 4.8 million registrants are connected to ICQ for an average of 2 hours and 35 minutes, and are using the software for an average of 69 minutes. With recent technology and capacity upgrades provided by America Online, ICQ now exceeds more than 700,000 simultaneous users during periods of peak usage. (source: ICQ)

It is the most popular software on C/NET's download.com, was the recipient of PC Magazine's "Best Shareware Award," and was named "The Biggest Messaging Phenomenon" of 1998 by C/NET. The ICQ Web site has also spawned one of the Internet's most active, international and loyal registrant-based communities, with thousands of ICQ registrant-created Web sites, message boards and lists.
