The PowerBook 1400 is unique in that the case has a "skin" feature where a portion of the top lid can be swapped for different designs.
Based on the PowerPC 603e processor, (133 or 166 megahertz) the PowerBook 1400 systems can handle everything from complex spread-sheets to text- and graphics-intensive reports. They feature a removable, modular high speed CD-ROM drive, giving you access to the wealth of resources available on CD-ROM, including the latest productivity software and multimedia games. And their 11.3-inch (diagonal) color SVGA displays (dual-scan for the 1400cs model, active-matrix for the 1400c model) provide outstanding quality and bright, vivid colors, as well as ample room for viewing your work— or play.
General Information
Announced in October 1996, The PowerBook 1400 was a partial answer to a number of questions about recent PowerBooks. Powered by the same 117MHz PowerPC 603e as the Macintosh PowerBook 5300, the 1400 was the first PowerBook to include an internal CD-ROM drive (6X). The bay for the sleep-swappable drive could also accommodate a variety of other storage options, including MO and zip drives. The RAM came in stackable modules (another PowerBook first) allowing for up to 64 MB of RAM. The 1400 also included an Internal expansion slot for video-out or Ethernet cards, and two PC Card slots that could accommodate two Type II PC Cards or one Type III PC Card. Faster models with a small L2 cache and an 8x CD-ROM drive were also released. The 1400 was discontinued early in 1998.
Codename: Epic. Originally shipped with system software 7.5.3 and the PowerBook 1400 system enabler.
CPU
The PowerBook 1400 uses the PowerPC 603e processor in clock speeds of 117MHz, 133MHz and 166MHz.
Hard Disk
The PowerBook 1400 uses EIDE for the internal hard disk. The 1400 shipped with drive sizes of 750MB, 1GB or 2GB.
Video
The PowerBook 1400 uses a 11.3" display and available in both dual-scan passive matrix (1400cs models) and active matrix (1400c models).
