Packard Bell NEC, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of desktop and notebook computers, monitors and servers for the home, business, education and government markets. The company markets its computers and peripherals globally under the Packard Bell, NEC and Zenith Data Systems brand names.

The merging of these brands now makes up the third-largest PC vendor in the world and second-largest in the United States according to International Data Corporation, an independent industry research firm based in Framingham, Mass.

Packard Bell NEC and its predecessors claim a long history of providing quality products at affordable prices—connecting millions of people to the expanding world of new ideas through advanced technology. The Packard Bell brand name itself dates to 1926 when it was used for consumer radios, and later, televisions. The current company reintroduced the brand in 1987 to pioneer the mass-marketing of PCs through the retail channel. In July 1996, Packard Bell Electronics, Inc., and NEC Corporation’s worldwide personal computer operations outside of Japan (formerly a part of NEC Technologies, Inc.) merged to form Packard Bell NEC, Inc. In February 1999, the business was reorganized so that all markets in the Americas are part of a single legal entity, while operations centered in Europe are part of Packard Bell NEC Europe, and those in Japan are part of NEC Japan. These three entities are closely linked and cooperate on a number of global initiatives covering everything from product development and customer services.

Packard Bell NEC now seeks to balance its business between retail and commercial accounts, while also making the most of the commercial and service opportunities presented by the Internet. The company further seeks to market highly innovative and differentiated products that will merit sufficient demand as to propel the company into a position where it can eventually become publicly traded and a top three global PC company.
