Power Computing Corporation was founded in late 1993 to bring a full suite of leading edge Mac OS systems directly to its customers at the lowest possible price. Using a direct business model, Power Computing is able to offer lower prices while also maintaining relationships with its customers. The core assets of the company were acquired by Apple Computer in late 1997:

CUPERTINO, Calif.--Sept. 2, 1997--Apple Computer, Inc. announced today that it will acquire Power Computing Corporation's core assets in a deal valued at $100 million in Apple common stock. Included in the key assets Apple will acquire are the right to retain key employees with expertise in direct marketing, distribution, and engineering; Power Computing's customer database; and the license to distribute the Mac OS operating system.

PowerCenter Pro Series

All PowerCenter Pro models ship with a base configuration including an exclusive 60MHz bus technology, on-board 3D video hardware acceleration, upgradeable video subsystem featuring 2MB of on-board video DRAM (upgradeable to 4MB), 1MB upgradeable Level 1 cache, 16X CD-ROM drive, 16 MB of RAM, a new generation 2GB 5400 RPM hard drive, dual SCSI buses including a fast internal SCSI channel at 10MB/second, three PCI slots, on-board 10BaseT Ethernet with both AAUI and RJ-45 connectors, an extended keyboard, mouse and more than $1,000 in bundled software.

All PowerCenter Pro systems are equipped with an upgradeable CPU daughter card, making future processor upgrades fast and easy to perform. PowerCenter Pro customers will also be able to take advantage of internal fast SCSI, featuring speeds of up to 10MB per second, and a second SCSI external SCSI bus allowing for more SCSI devices. In addition, the new PowerCenter Pro models are offered in custom configurable low-profile and minitower enclosures which can be tailored to meet each user's needs. The low-profile enclosure includes one front accessible 5 1/4" bay for the 16X CD-ROM drive, one front accessible 3 1/2" bay for the floppy drive, one internal 3 1/2" bay for the internal hard drive. The minitower enclosure includes three front accessible 5 1/4" bays with one for the 16X CD-ROM drive, and one front accessible 3 1/2" bay for the floppy drive, and one internal 3 1/2" bay for one full-size or two half-size internal drives.
