The Power Macintosh 9600 was the last Power Macintosh to support 6 PCI slots. The Power Macintosh G3 tower only allows for 3 slots, so the 9600 remained for sale even after the launch of the G3 for those requiring more than 3 PCI slots.
The 9600 was discontinued in March of 1998.
General Information
Although it looked different on the outside, the motherboard was basically the same design as that of the Power Macintosh 9500. The 9600 was originally priced at $4,700 for the dual 200Mhz configuration, $4,200 for the single 233Mhz, and $3,700 for the single 200 Mhz. In August, the 9600 was "speed bumped" with either a 300 or 350 Mhz "Mach 5" chip, a new high speed variant on the 604e. The 350 Mhz version barely shipped before Apple took it off the market, partially because of the small supply of 350 Mhz chips, but mostly because their upcoming PPC 750-based "Gossomer" Macs.
Codename: Kansas. Originally shipped with MacOS 7.6.1.
CPU
The enhanced Power Macintosh 8600 and 9600 computers use a new microprocessor, code named Mach 5, that is based on the PowerPC 604e architecture. Among the features of the Mach 5 microprocessor are:
- on-chip data and instruction caches of 32 KB each
- processor clock speed up to 7 times the bus clock speed
Memory
Features 12 slots of 168-pin DIMMs. Minimum speed 70ns.
Video
The enhanced Power Macintosh 9600 includes a video display card that supports acceleration of 2D graphics and text. The display card has 8 MB of buffer memory and cannot be expanded.
