The SGI Tezro is the second most recently released (as of December 2005) series of high-end computer workstation available from SGI, and is the immediate successor to the SGI Octane line. The systems are available in both rack-mount and tower versions, and the series was released in June 2003 with a list price of $20,500. The Tezro was released alongside the SGI Onyx4 (and because of component sharing, the Onyx4 and rack-mountable Tezro share many components, including skins). The rackmount system consists of either 1 or 2 2U modules.
Both tower and rack-mountable systems marked the return of the original 'cube' logo to SGI machines, which was welcomed by the loyal user base.
Architecture
Similar to other SGI systems, the Tezro uses a non-blocking crossbar interconnect to connect all subsystems together.
ARCS is provided as the boot firmware, similar to all contemporary SGI computer systems.
Processors
Tezro systems including either one, two or four 64-bit R16000 CPUs (in multiprocessor configurations) are available in both rack-mount and tower systems. Available MIPS R16000 CPU configurations include single, dual or quad 700MHz or 800MHz with 4MB L2 cache, and dual or quad 1GHz with 16MB L2 cache.
Memory Subsystem
Memory in the Tezro is organized into four banks of two DIMMs for the "tower" or deskside package, and eight banks of two DIMMs for the rackmount version. This results in a memory capacity from 512 MBytes to 8 Gbytes total system memory for the tower, and 0.5 to 16GB for the rackmount version. The DIMMS used are compatible with those used in the SGI Origin 3000, SGI Origin 300, and SGI Origin 350.
All models based on the Origin 3000 architecture use Double Data Rate (DDR) synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM), at the lowest level organized into banks of two DIMMs each - memory may only be added or removed from the system in pairs of two DIMMs. Both DIMMs within a bank must be of the same density, however two different banks may hold different density DIMMs from each other.
SGI produced DIMMs with capacities of 256MB to 1GB, using DRAM chips with densities of either 128 Mbits or 256 Mbits. All DIMMs include directory memory to support cache coherence between local and remote memory, but some parts include "premium" directory memory which is recommended for configurations with more than 128 processors. Memory was generally marketed in kits of two DIMMs, where the capacity of the kit would be given as 512MB, 1GB, or 2GB.
The following table shows the part numbers for individual DIMMs according to their capacity.

Graphics
The high-end Odyssey graphics adapter, V12, is the only graphics configuration available.
Dual head (twin V12 cards, not DCD) are available only in rackmount configurations consisting of 2 modules. Dual head operation is not possible on the 1 GHz CPU models due to the height of the CPU heatsinks making it impossible to install the V12 in the 2U chassis. When the 1 GHz CPU node is installed, the V12 must be installed in the Workstation Expansion Enclosure.
Dual head in Tezro towers is not possible, because the system requires more power than the tower Tezro is capable of delivering.
Audio
Tower systems ship with analogue audio output as standard, while PCI cards provide audio capabilities (including 2-channel 24-bit AES and 8-channel ADAT connectors) on rack-mountable versions.
Expansion
The number of available 64-bit PCI slots included in a Tezro system depend upon the number of CPUs installed in the system:
- 7 133/100MHz slots in two- or four-CPU tower systems
- 3 133/100MHz slots in single-CPU tower systems
- 6 100MHz slots and one 66MHz slot in 4U rackmountable systems
- 2 100MHz slots and one 66MHz slot in 2U rackmountable systems.
All PCI slots in each Tezro model are 3.3V card slots.
A single U160 SCSI connector is available for attaching external peripherals, as is an optional FireWire card.
Operating System
The only operating system produced for the Tezro is SGI's IRIX.
